The Characters in The Length of the World
Cian and Saxon are the principal characters in the story.
Cian. She is a Yanomami Indian living in the Amazon. Age twenty-nine. When she was nine years old, her village was attacked and she was the only survivor. She was severely injured and lost her right leg as a result.
Saxon Lostasia. An amateur explorer, he helps his sister Kaitlin find exotic plants. Age thirty-two. He and Kaitlin stowed away on a ship in New York harbor when he was twelve and she was eight. They have not been back to the United States since then.
There are five other major characters
Kaitlin. She is Saxon’s sister and an amateur ethnobotanist. She is compiling an ethnopharmacopia, a manual of native cures from around the world. Age twenty-eight.
Rachel. Kaitlin’s nine-year-old daughter. She was born in Amsterdam and has never had a permanent home, always traveling with Kaitlin and her uncle Saxon.
Bec-Kama-Ra. A Bedouin girl, age six. She was a captive on the Tecora and was rescued by Saxon when the Tecora went down in the mid Atlantic.
Kabilis. Penelope Kabilis, New York City police detective. She is working on a series of mother-daughter disappearances when Cian and Bec-Kama-Ra are kidnapped.
Stormy. Kabilis’ daughter. She is eleven years old. She and her mother are kidnapped when Kabilis gets too close to solving the mystery.
The following characters are listed chronologically by their first appearance in the book.
Hero. Rachel’s pet dog she picked up in India.
Silveira. A thug on the docks at Manaus.
Borboleta Noiva. Portuguese for Butterfly Bride, she is an ancient cargo freighter based in Lisbon.
Captain Sinoway. Captain of the Borboleta
Stanley Dortworthy. A passenger on the Borboleta.
Miss Lillian. An elderly lady on her way back to Spain onboard the Borboleta.
Doki. The stoker from the engine room on the Borboleta, 70 years old, plays the guitar.
Billy Kane and Magnalana MeCinco. Two children on the Borboleta who become friends with Rachel.
Mr. Choy. Member of the crew of the Borboleta part Chinese and part Norwegian
Cleopatra. An Egyptian, she works in the galley of the Borboleta
Tribi-Leya. A jaguar in the Amazon, friend of Cian.
Campoo. A Capuchin monkey, Bec-Kama-Ra’s pet.
Tecora. A freighter sailing out of Mombassa
Captain Victor Brutus Booth. Captain of the Tecora and henchman for Oxana.
Miss Alverez. Supervisor of Santa Mario de Angelo orphanage in Lisbon where Bec-Kama-Ra is left.
Maria. A Chihuahua in Lisbon. She has a brief encounter with Hero.
Pocapena Sanchez de Buena Vista. A bullfighter in Lisbon who Kaitlin falls for.
Oxana. Evil woman who trades in exotic and endangered animals as well as women and little girls.
